The European Union has launched EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, a defensive maritime security operation aimed at restoring and protecting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf. This operation, initiated in response to numerous Houthi attacks on commercial vessels since October 2023, will provide naval presence, situational awareness, and protection to ensure the safety of merchant ships. Led by Commodore Vasilios Griparis and based in Larissa, Greece, Operation ASPIDES will collaborate with international partners and coordinate closely with EUNAVFOR ATALANTA. This response follows UN Security Council Resolution 2722 condemning the attacks and affirming the rights of states to defend their vessels in accordance with international law.
