This research paper is an exploration of the diverse attitudes towards women evident in the activities, ideologies and policy formulations of a wide range of ‘Islamist’ movements, parties and organizations. The paper uses the term ‘Islamist’ to identify movements, political parties and organizations that have focused their activities not simply on the social and economic development of Muslim societies but also attempts to build an ‘Islamic community’ by establishing an Islamic state or implementing Islamic laws and moral codes.
