As this paper is being written (December 2023), two major conflicts are in progress (Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Gaza) together with numerous incursions by terrorist groups in parts of Africa and South-East Asia. It seems ever more urgent that means are found to stop the global spread of hate and violence. Does education play any part in this? Can education in any way interrupt the extremism that underlies the justification for the dehumanization and brutal treatment of people? This paper examines some of the arguments about strategy internationally in this highly complex area.
